Óscar Carmona

António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona (Lisbon, November 24th 1869 - Lisbon, April 18th 1951) was a politician and military Portuguese. He was the 10 {{E}} president of Portugal, of 1933 with 1951.

Minister for the war since 1923, Carmona benefitted from the pustch of May 28th 1926 to reach the capacity: he is one of the three leaders of Portugal named successively Prime Minister by the military junta.

In 1927, Carmona names António de Oliveira Salazar Minister for Finance. Impressed by Salazar, it appoints it President of the Council in 1932, giving him a capacity higher than his. In 1933, the new constitution creates the Estado Novo: Carmona is named president of Portugal. However, this role is only one official, all the returning capacity in fact in Salazar.

He plays nevertheless a big role during the revolts popular of 1935 and 1936, from his assuaging speeches calling upon peace and safety. He uses the same tactics during the Second world war, and this in spite of his dissensions with Salazar. This last will however relieve never Carmona, contrary to Francisco Craveiro Lopes, undoubtedly considering its reputation too important.

The presidency of Carmona finishes only with its death, in 1951.
