Íñigo Méndez de Vigo (January 21st 1956 with Tétouan Morocco then occupied by the Spain) is a Spanish Political personality and a European Député with the the European Parliament.
He is member of the Spanish popular party. He belonged to the office of Convention for the Charte of the basic rights of the European Union and the Groupe Amato.
In an interview with the World of the January 5th 2005, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo forsakes set language and politically correct to affirm its 4 truths on the project of Constitution:
- Yes - it is convenient to submit to referendum this project because it is of a “ act of political recasting ” and not about a simple amendment of the Treaties.
- Yes - it would have been convenient to couple the popular vote on the Constitution with the European elections of June 2004. That would have been possible if the governments had managed more quickly to agree on the project adopted by Convention in July 2003.
- Not - the question of the candidature of the Turkey has nothing to do with the Constitution. Not - the topic of the Laïcité is not an real issue in this debate not more than that of social Europe.
- Not - in the event of failure of the ratifications it will not be possible to return to the Traité of Nice nor to set out again in the search of a “ another Europe ”.
If 4/5 of the States - representing a sufficient critical mass - ratify the Treaty at the date envisaged (November 1st, 2006), “
they will go from before - they will denounce the existing Treaties and will meet the following day to approve the new Constitution ”.
