History

The priory Sainte-Marie d' Evergnicourt

It is into 1074 that the priory of Evergnicourt was founded, the Abbey of Saint-Hubert had a third of the village since 956, the church was called “Sainte-Marie Church”.

Destroyed by the effect of time, the priory was restored into 1154/56 by Hugues says Cholet, count de Roucy, to replace the priory Saint-Paul de Neufchâtel. It equipped it so that one lives there to twenty monk. All that Hugues with Evergnicourt had, was given to the Abbey with the rights of justice, markets, tolls… the Abbey of St-Hubert became sole owner of this soil and kept it until the revolution.

We can also note that in 1179 Guiscard, count de Roucy, to the chapter of Laon the Hospital of Evergnicourt gave. Until now the close parishes (Menneville, Proved, Proviseux, Guignicourt etc…. were under the dependence of the priory of Evergnicourt. Towards the end of the XVIIe century, we see growing the power of the seigniory of Guignicourt; on the other hand, we note the disaffection of St-Hubert for Guignicourt. Indeed the Abbey gives up its possessions too offset compared to Evergnicourt.

It is in this optics that the monks had yielded their stronghold dice 1643 to Valexien de Flavigny against half of the mill of Evergnicourt. The Abbey of St-Hubert and our priory will after a fashion cross the history until the revolution.
