Évaux-the-baths

Évaux-the-Baths is a common French, located in the department of the Creuse and the area the Limousin.

Geography

Located in the middle of the Country of Combrailles, with the borders of Bourbonnais, the Limousin and Walk; profiting from a very soft and dry climate, of a fertile nature, surrounded by many rivers, Évaux-the-Baths profits of a very péservée nature still.

Climate

Évaux-the-Baths has a degraded oceanic climate due to the relief of the Massif Central.
the average temperatures annual lie between 9° and 12° with a minimal average in January of 3,5° and a maximum average in July - August of 19°.
precipitations are about regular throughout the year: from 60 to 110 millimetres per month with large storms during the summer.

History

Historical general information

The city was founded there is more than 2.000 years by the Romains, which there discovered and developed thermal baths around the sources of warm water. Known under the name of Ivaonum at the time, this name referred to the Ivaos god.

A place of Christian worship developed around the tomb of the Marien hermit, died in the 6th century.

A monastery would have existed at the 10th century, but it would have been destroyed at the 17th century.

Capital of Combraille at the 13th century (under Alphonse of Poitiers?)

Later, it was besieged during the Guerre One hundred Year old (1337-1453) by the Truck drivers.

The abandoned thermal spa since the 5th century, knows a beginning of revival with the 17th century. But C is especially starting from 1973 qu ' Évaux becomes the world capital of the hydrotherapy and of présipauté creusoise.

The hydropathic establishment at summer requisitioned by autoritées of Vichy of 1942 with the 1944.De many ones personnalitées of the 3rd Republic were held in the large hotel. Most known: Edouard Herriot; Leon Jouhaux; generals; deputies; Jews and the personnalitées various ones. Kept by a group of GMR, they were released on June 8th, 1944. A study has been just made and it is available in the large Creusoises bookstores under the title " the camp of administrative internment of Evaux of 1942à 1944.

Structure crowned

Romance Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church (MH), old church of prévôté about saint Augustin, altered 12th century at the 17th century: clocher-porche* 11th/12th on 5 floors, with arrow covered with shingles, capitals 11th, ribbed vaults 15th destroyed in 1942 and replaced by a frame, châsse* gilded wood 17th.
