History
Etymology: Strata (1373), which means " road pavée".Etrat was probably nothing more than one hamlet, at the edge of the great Roman way which one indicated by " via strata" because, unlike other transportation routes, it was empierrée and paved. The way which passed by this place made it possible to go Lyon to Saint-Rambert, via Saint-Chamond. It was thus an important axis which connected the valley of the the Rhone to the Plain of the Forez. (One found at the 19th century, during road works, of the fragments of tiles with edges) With the the Middle Ages, this hamlet depended on Turn-in-Jarez, important stronghold near. Significant market with the Middle Ages. At XVIe and 17th centuries, Etrat was the theater of conflicts between catholics and Protestants. The area inhabitant of Saint-Etienne had not been saved by the wars of religion, but after the proclamation of the Edit of Nantes, one could have thought that the competitions would grow blurred with time: it of it was nothing, they remained during most of the 17th century with a sometimes frightening violence as it was the case in Etrat. At the 19th century, the hamlet of Etrat obtains a church (1850) and becomes officially common by decree of April 5th, 1884. The competitions between Turn-in-Jarez and Etrat had made this separation necessary.
