Geography
History
Since the medieval time, the Village of Etobon (close to Héricourt in Haute-Saône) is closely related to the History of the county of Montbeliard, then with that of the Principality. In 1748, after the loss of the Four dependant Grounds (Clémont, Châtelot, Blamont, Héricourt), the Principauté becomes again county. The Earth of Etobon will remain attached to the county of Montbeliard, until the French revolution.
On the height of the village, there was an important fortress which belonged already to the lords de Chalon. Hugues of Burgundy, brother of Renaud (count de Montbéliard), was the suzerain in 1287.
In 1407, by the advent of the marriage of the princess Henriette d' Orbe/Montfaucon (grand-daughter of Etienne de Montfaucon), the ground of Etobon and its castle pass in the house of Wurtemberg.
The existence of the castle is attested since 1256. It is set fire to and destroyed in 1519 per the count Guillaume de Furstemberg, lord of Héricourt, then in war against the duke Ulric Ier of Wurtemberg, count de Montbéliard, for a business of succession.
The castle was strong by its position and very considerable work which had been made. It was located at 167 m above the village and measured 220 m in its bigger length and 60 m broad. Set fire to and destroyed by the count de Furstemberg, it fell in ruin; Ulric Ier, count de Montbéliard, who recovered the castle, did not believe to have to give it in state. As of the XVIIe century, after the disaster of the Thirty Year old war, the inhabitants of the village, with the permission of prince de Montbéliard, took of it a great quantity of stones for the construction of houses. Their descendants imitated them in this destruction. Today, there remain nothing any more of this castle.
