Étel is located at 18 km of Auray, 30 km of Lorient and 30 km of Vannes.
History
The city was created on the territory of the commune of Erdeven following a decree promulgated on August 7th 1850.

The drama of Étel
In order to test a new type of lifeboat, Alain Bombard, in company of six volunteers, tries the October 3rd 1958 to cross on board its boat of survival of its design the bar of Étel, large blade with the mouth of Ria formed by the conjunction of the rising tide, the flood and water which runs out of the river. The boat is turned over then, followed shortly after Vice Admiral Schwerer II , the Lifeboat present on zone. The assessment is heavy: nine dead including 3 on the boat of Bombard and 6 among the rescuers.
