History

The site occupied today by the Town of Etaples present of the traces going up at the Paleolithic , very long period beginning with the quaternary era here three million years to finish at the beginning of the tenth millenium before Jesus-Christ. Some cut Silex discovered on the site of Brawl are old approximately 240.000 years.

One finds, starting from Hallstadt, with the age of iron (800 years before Jesus-Christ), of many sites of the installation of Gallic on the coast and in the dunes bordering the North-West of the Town of Étaples.

Although the site had been occupied at the beginning of the first millenium by the Romans, the city even of Etaples was probably founded by the Francs which invaded the Morinie during 4th and 5th centuries. It bears the name of Stapula at that time, " the entrepôt".

The 9th century was, for the city, one time dramatic. On several occasions it was plundered, put at bag, was burned by the Normands which were spread in all the country in the search of spoils. They had made city their home base and the warehouse of all the richnesses collected in the neighborhoods.

Mathieu of Alsace, count de Boulogne built a fortress in there 1172, which was high on the ruins of a castle much older (dating from the Roman domination) whose traces of fire let think that it was burned at the time of a raid of the Norman ones.

Philippe Auguste made of it the main port of the fleets of North (1193).

1346, the English returning victorious of the Bataille of Crécy set fire to the city.

1355, the Duc of Lancaster plundered the city.

The city undergoes seats in 1351, 1378 and 1435.

1455, it was again destroyed by the flames. It was still the same in 1546.

1492, November 3: The Treated of Étaples between Charles VIII and Henri VII of England is the first treaty between the France and the England since the end of the Guerre One hundred Year old. It prepared the Guerres of Italy of France.

The castle was destroyed in 1660.

Of 1803 with 1805, Napoleon i joins together a powerful army all along the coasts of the Manche with an aim of invading England, its enemy irreducible. It was celebrates it Camp of Boulogne. During two years, the troops of the 6th army corps of the Maréchal Ney stationed in the town of Étaples and its close relations surroundings. The Emperor came several times in Étaples to pass his troops in review there. The population had an unforgettable memory of it.

In 1848 was inaugurated the railway line connecting Amiens and Boulogne and which passed by Étaples. During the First World War, Étaples lived at the British hour: the army installed an immense camp of drive to the Levin mount now covered with dwellings. In this camp which counted until 80  000 men burst in 1917 violent a Mutinerie. Étaples lived during several days of the dramatic hours; in its streets were held extremely violent scenes. The enemy, attracted by the military installations, bombarded the city, causing destruction and victims among the population. For the heavy tribute paid during four years, the city accepted the Military Cross in 1920.

During the Second world war, Étaples, like the majority of the towns of France, knew the foreign occupation. It was again the target of the air raids which made 70 civilian victims and destroyed or damaged one the third of the dwellings. In 1949, the Minister for Defense came to fasten a palm on the Military Cross of the city. It lute the following quotation: “ This fishing port paid a heavy tribute for the release of the territory and deserved well to appear among the cities glorieusement ravaged. The courage of its population and particularly the tenacity of its sailors will remain an example for all the craftsmen of the national raising ”.
