Éristale of the flowers

Myathropa florea (or Éristale of the flowers) is a syrphe very common on the Fleur S of May to September, widespread in North Africa and all the Europe. It belongs to the family of the Syrphides.

This very clean fly (it does not stop being cleaned, in particular before taking its flight) is often taken for a bee because of its size and its general aspect. The drawings sharp yellow of its abdomen however make it possible to distinguish it rather easily. The drawings of the Mesonotum evoke a death's-head more or less, from where its English names (dead head fly) and German (Totenkopfschwebfliege).

The larvae develop in the cavities filled with stagnant water, for example in the old trees.
