The name of Épernay is generally interpreted as resulting from the Gallo-Roman “sparnacus” which means place planted of spines . According to the legend, the place is not whereas a filled up marsh of brambles refer to “sparnacum” and even with “aquae-perennial”. The legend wants that the city was based by brothers tanners come to settle on the edges of the brook the cubry because water helped to soften the skins. Nevertheless it seems well that the foundation of the city is former to the installation of this industry.

After the Germanic invasions, the city passes under the domination of the Francs and it is Euloge (an officer of Clovis) which sees it allotting. It yields it to Saint Remi for: 5000 pounds of money in 496. In 593 Saint Remi bequeaths the commune by will to the church of Rheims, it is Frédégonde which makes it plunder. Finally in 720 and 765, in fact the wars of Charles Martel affect the city devastating it again.

The Middle Ages

In 1024, the city passes to the hands counts de Champagne following a treaty between the Archevêque of Rheims (Eble de Roucy) and Eudes II, champagne count. It will remain under their influence until in 1284 where Jeanne I {{Re}} of Navarre, last Champagne countess, marries Philippe IV of France taking along the seigniory of Épernay with it. But the power struggles continue and Épernay still often changes hands then being plundered and being burned. In spite of these disturbed times, this period is beneficial with the commune in term of installations of which some leave persistent memories until our days, it is in 1428 that it would have been taken again by Charles VII helped of Jeanne d' Arc. But on February 25th 1432, the city falls to the hands from the Duc from Burgundy which constrained population with a three years exile which will cease in 1435 when this one made peace with Charles VII: Because you are quite skilful, and of valiant courage:
Tesmoing is of your heart this young person fureur
Of which you desired close the Marne to attack the Emperor,
Which having passed the terminals of Meuse
Menassoit your Paris, your large' City fameuse However, the technique of the ground burned of François I {{er}} force Charles Quint to sign peace and the king helps with the rebuilding of the city by exempting the inhabitants of taxes and while enabling them to take in the forests what to rebuild the city in particular. Then starting from 1560, the quarrels of religion start to finish in war and even if Épernay is Catholique and faithful to the crown, it is victim of the invasions.
