Élie Bertrand

Élie Bertrand is a Pasteur, a geologist and a Naturaliste Suisse, born the May 17th 1713 with Orbe and dead the August 23rd 1797 with Yverdon.

Biography

After having followed studies of Theology to Lausanne and Geneva between 1731 and 1738, it is devoted in 1740 to Lausanne. He exerts like Pasteur during some annéées before d´entrer with the service of the French church of Bern in 1744 like Diacre, then like Pasteur.

He leaves in 1765 for the Poland where he binds with the king Stanislas II of Poland and directs the Department of industry, agriculture and the natural science during one year before d´être anobli in 1768.

He returns in 1767 in Suisse and s´installe in Yverdon where he founds the Bibliothèque (in 1761) as well as the economic company of the city. He is then member various learned societies (Lyon, Geneva, Florence, etc)

His/her brother is the agronomist Jean Bertrand (1708-1777).

  • Collection of various treaties on the natural history of the ground and the fossils (L. Chambeau, Avignon, 1766).
  • Letter with Mr. Cte de Buffon… or Critical and New test on the general theory of the ground, with a note of the last speech of Mr. Pallas, on the formation of the mountains, the changemens arrived at the sphere, etc (Besancon, 1782).
