Saint Éleuthère is the 13th pope of the Catholic church and approximately succeeds Sôter in 174. Greek, originating in Nicopolis d' Épire, it is by him that holy Irenee completes his list of the popes. He controls the Church of Rome under the reigns of Marc-Aurèle then Commode until his death, the May 24th 189 according to the catholic tradition. It is a Greek bishop, originating in Nicopolis and which was deacon with Rome at the time of Anicet.
The essence of its apostolic action proceeds in quarrels with the multiple gnostic sects which multiplied the such Marcionite S, the Valentinien S, the Montaniste S with which he chooses a great severity after having shown leniency a long time. It receives from the king of Édesse, small kingdom peripheral and combined with the Roman empire, Abgar IX, a request of missionaries without one knowing too which answer is brought by Éleuthère.
