Élée ( Vélia for the Roman , Latin Velia in ) was a Greek quoted on the Tyrrhenian coast, in Campanie, close to the Golfe of Salerno. It is here that was created the Eleatic school, philosophical school founded by Parménide and Xénophane and followed by Zénon d' Élée and Mélisse.
From an administrative point of view, current the Velia is a frazione commune of Ascea (since 2003, Ascea-Velia) (SA) and counts approximately a thousand of inhabitants. Velia should not be confused with Novi Velia, a commune which is close.
History
Élée was rested by the Greeks of Phocée who fled the invasion of the Perse S in minor Asia. The creation of the city east, like others, brought back by Strabon in its Geography . These colonists joined the other colonies of the Italy of the South which formed the Grande Greece. Élée remained independent a long time like many cities in Italy. Towards 275 av. J. - C., it becomes the allied one of Rome. The city was abandoned with the Moyen-âge. And nowadays, the archeological site is in the national park of the Cilento.
