A écorégion or ecological area is a rather broad geographical area being characterized by the single character from its morphology, of its Géologie, sound Climat, its ground S, its resources Eau, of its fauna and its Flore.

The World Wildlife Fund currently divides the terrestrial Surface into 8 écozone S, containing they-even a total of 867 or 874 écorégions (according to the sources).
238 of them were classified like the best representative ones of the various types of habitats of our planète.
These 238 areas are more known under the name of Global 200, one indexes there:

  • 142 terrestrial écorégions classified of 14 Biome S:
    • 1. Tropical forests and subtropical wet caducifoliées ( ombrophilous Forests )
    • 2. Tropical forests and subtropical dry caducifoliées ( tropophilous Forests )
    • 3. Tropical forests and subtropical conifériennes
    • 4. caducifoliées and mixed moderate Forests
    • 5. moderate Forests conifériennes
    • 6. Northern forests, Taïga
    • 7. Meadows, savannas and undergrowth tropical and subtropical
    • 8. Meadows, savannas and undergrowth moderate
    • 9. Meadows and flooded savannas
    • 10. Meadows and undergrowth of mountains ( alpine Lawns )
    • 11. Tundra
    • 12. Forests, wood and undergrowth Mediterranean ( sclerophyllous Forests )
    • 13. xerophytic Deserted and undergrowth
    • 14. Mangrove S
  • 53 écorégions of fresh water classified into 7 Biome S
    • 15. Large Rivers (7)
    • 16. Broad To rivet Headwaters (5)
    • 17. Delta S (6)
    • 18. Small Rivers (21)
    • 19. Big lakes (4)
    • 20. Small Lakes (7)
    • 21. xeric Basins (3)
  • 43 marine écorégions classified in 5 biome S
    • 22. polar Milieux
    • 23. Inland seas and moderate coastal regions
    • 24. Courants moderate
    • 25. Courants tropical
    • 26. Coral reefs

Many estimates that this classification could be the base on which a system of Démocratie biorégionale would be based.

The écozone S are very well defined. They follow the principal edges Continent ales, whereas the limits écorégionales are fuzzier, prone to change and controversy.
