The écoprovince corresponds to a zone of biogeographic distribution broader than a écorégion and smaller than a écozone.
The European Agence for the environment uses to indicate a écoprovince the biogeographic terminology of Région and indexed 11 of them:
- the artic region
- the boreal area
- the Atlantic area
- the continental area
- the alpine area (more generally of mountain)
- the area pannonienne
- the Mediterranean region
- the area macaronésienne
- the steppe area
- the area of the littorals of the Black Sea
- the Anatolian area
