The etymology of the name Échirolles is discussed. The popular assumption more makes it go back to a Latin form meaning “squirrel”, explaining why the mammal is reproduced on the blazon of the city. One second assumption, based on the existence of localities Paronym S (i.e. bearing the same name almost) and showing similar topographic characteristics, connects it to the word “Laîche”, the name of a plant of the wetlands. Échirolles would then have meant “with laîche” in the beginning.
