Écaussinnes

Écaussinnes (in Walloon Scåssenes ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut.

The commune is located between Mons and Nivelles.

The village results from the fusion of three villages:

It is because of existence of these three villages that Écaussinnes is with the Pluriel. Moreover one says: “Welcome in Écaussinnes”…

Etymology

The name of Écaussinnes would come from a Latin word calcinae (lime kilns), where the calcareous stone is calcined to make lime of them).

Names Écaussinnes- of Enghien and Écaussinnes- Lalaing rise from the marriage into 1357 of Jeanne d' Écaussinnes, girl of Oste d' Écaussinnes, with Simon III of Lalaing (close to Douai), and of that of their daughter Marie de Lalaing in 1384 with Englebert d' Enghien, founder of the town of Enghien, which had acquired the seigniory close of the Madness.

The name of Marche comes from Latin marca (limit). This village was in extreme cases of old the Comté of Hainaut and of the Duché of the Brabant.

History

It is impossile to date creation from the village of Ecaussinnes.

The oldest trace of the human presence in the entity is a polished axe out of flint of Spiennes, going back to approximately 2250 years before Jesus-Christ, discovered in 1974 during work of excavation to the career of Scouflény.

It is not a question of a Granite (rock magmatic), but of a Sedimentary rock, which was formerly called “Marble of Ligny” (or also “Ecaussinnes”). This rock contains primarily fossils of crinoides (animals of the same family as the sea urchins), whose skeleton is composed of crystals of Calcite. These crystals shine as quartz in the granites does it. It is undoubtedly this resemblance which is at the origin of name “small-granite”.

The exploitation of the stone layers with Ecaussinnes is very old, as testify some to the documents dating from the 14th century. But it is at the 19th century that it took its rise, with the arrival of the vapor which made it possible to facilitate work carriers of pumping, lifting etc… It is of this time that date the development of the district of Ecaussinnes-Careers, in particular thorough by the arrival of the railroad in 1842. Festivities/Folklore

Écaussinnes is especially famous for its to taste matrimonial which takes place each year the Whit Monday, and this since 1903. At the time of May of 1903, Marcel Tricot had the idea of a joke and placed close to the church a poster on which one could read: Monday the 1st er June 1903 (Pentecost) at 4 p.m.: To taste monster offered by the sixty young girls to marry center of the commune. This joke was the starting point of what became a tradition, and which is worth in Ecaussinnes the nickname of “ Cité of the love ”. With Écaussinnes-in Enghien is the castle of the Madness (XIV) occupied by the counts de Lichtervelde.
