Ébroïn
Ébroïn (death in 681) Mayor of the palate of Neustrie of 658 with 673 and of 675 to its death. During its career it was violent and despotic, and wanted to impose the authority of its province on the Burgundy and the Austrasie.
Mayor of the palate under Clotaire III, it was elected in 659 and made himself odious by his cruelty. After the death of Clotaire III in 670, it put on the throne Thierry III. But hatred that one dedicated to him flashes back on the king, who gave up his crown with Childéric II. It was locked up in the monastery of Luxeuil.
He escaped from his prison from dead of Childéric II in 675. It formed a party and made assassinate the son of Erchinoald, Leudesius, that Thierry III, re-installed on the throne, had named mayor of the palate. It had the audacity to impose a son of Clotaire III, which it made crown under the name of Clovis III. It ransacked the provinces which refused to recognize this phantom of king and forced Thierry III to return to him the load of mayor of the palate.
The Aquitaine was detached consequently from the frank kingdom and the Austrasie, refusing to recognize it, obtained two mayors of the palate. In 680, it gained a victory over Pépin of Herstal in Latofao (today Laffaux, between Soissons and Laon). The following year, it was killed by Ermenfroi, lord whom it had stripped of his goods.
Ébroin had as an antagonist and enemy Saint Leger. Being returned Master of its person, it made him burst the eyes, then to decapitate in Sarcinium (today Know-Saint-Leger) in Artois towards 678.
