History
Malta-Brown, in illustrated France (1882), devoted a small note to the history of Ébreuil, which one can extract:- “Ébreuil is an old city whose Sidoine Apollinaire makes mention. It was claimed that César had established a camp in the surroundings. All the country was devastated by the Goths, and remains of weapons there are frequently found. Under Charlemagne, Ébreuil had one of the four palates assigned for residence with Louis, his son, raised by him with the throne of Aquitaine. Lothaire made gift of this city to monks, who there founded an abbey, become soon very powerful and very riche ; it had, in 1115, 34 churches in the diocese of Bourges, 6 in the diocese of Rodez er 12 in that of Direction, without counting the richnesses that the relics of Saint Maixent, often visited pilgrims, attracted in Ébreuil, where they had been deposited at the 10th century. During the war of the Praguerie, Ébreuil was taken by the lord of Chabannes, one of the chiefs of the révoltés ; but the city returned soon under the obedience of the king Charles VII, which remained some time there.
The abbey, which had lost much of its importance, was removed at the 18th century by the bishop of Clermont and was replaced by a hospital. ”
Malta-brown mentioned moreover two old Latin denominations for the city: Ebroiacum or Ebrogilum .
