Ålesund (or Aalesund ) is a Norwegian Kommune of the county of Møre og Romsdal. It counted 40  001 inhabitants at January 1st 2004.

Ålesund is a port of Mer, with 230 Kilomètre S with the North-eastern of Bergen. The city is re-elected for its Architecture of style Art nouveau (or Jugendstil).

Geography

Ålesund is located on a Archipel, of which it occupies three of the external islands Occident ales, Hessa, Aspøy and Nørvøy, which surrounds a picturesque port. Founded in 1824, the city is the maritime outlet of Sunnmøre and an important fishing port to the Hareng S.

Ålesund is close to the Fjord S Jorund and Geiranger, very tourist. It is well served in roads and is connected to Oslo, via Lillehammer, by a Railway. Ålesund is a port of call for the ships of passengers and freight travelling between Bergen, Kingston upon Hull, Newcastle, Hamburg and Trondheim. Ålesund is also a stopover of the Hurtigruten, coastal road daily ensuring the connection between Bergen and points it Northern of Norway by means of fast steamers ( express train coastal ).

History

A little with the Southern the city is the ruins of the castle of famous the Hrolf Ganger, more known under the name of Rollon, founder, at the 9th century, of the dynasty of the dukes of Normandy.

Like many Norwegian cities, the majority of the buildings of Ålesund were built in Bois. And, like number of them, it was the prey of frequent Incendie S. The January 23rd 1904, the fire which occurred, whose flames were poked by a strong wind, destroyed almost all the city, that the inhabitants had to flee in middle of the night and in the extreme urgency. 800 houses were reduced of ashes and 10  000 people found homeless person.

The Emperor of Germany Guillaume II, which often spent its holidays to Ålesund, learning the catastrophe which had just fallen down on its vacation resort, dispatched there, with its expenses, several thousands of German craftsmen, as well as about fifty architects, who rebuilt the city out of stones and bricks in the very run style then called Art nouveau (in German, Jugendstil ) in particular comprising many turrets, arrows and ornamentations in frontages; the unit is characteristic and about single in the world.
