Álvaro Obregón

Álvaro Obregón Salido February 19th 1880 - July 17th 1928) was a Général and Mexican politician, president between 1920 and 1924

Born in the State from Sonora (Mexico), it made its entry on the political scene in 1911 when he became mayor of Huatabampo. At that time, it supported Francisco Madero against Pascual Orozco which was revolt. When the revolt carried out by Felix Díaz, nephew of Porfirio Díaz, and Victoriano Huerta and supported by Henry Lane Wilson, ambassador of the the United States reversed Madero and led to its execution, Obregón decided to join the camps of Venustiano Carranza. This alliance managed to draw aside Huerta of the capacity the July 14th 1914.

Obregón was a fervent supporter of Carranza and helped it, as a Minister for the war and the marine, to fight the guerilla carried out by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. ( to see: Mexican Civil war) In the field of the policy, it adopted a radical line and granted for example the right to the workers to join, strike, the guarantee of a minimum wage, and fixed a maximum number of work hours. When its measures were adopted, it was withdrawn from the policy and was devoted to agriculture.

However, it returned on the political scene in 1920, by hoping that Venustiano Carranza designates it as successor. He rebelled when he realized that Carranza wanted that Ignacio Bonnilas succeeds to him. The general Rodolfo Herrera killed Carranza in the State of Puebla. This one tried to flee with Cheval Mexico City to join Veracruz.

Adolfo of Huerta was president temporary for 6 months, between on June 1st 1920 and on February 1st of the same year. One organized elections which Obregón gained. Huerta resigned of the presidency and became Minister of Finances of Obregón.

Obregón founded reform agrarian and anticlericals, and maintained good relations with the the United States, in particular by the sale of Pétrole to the neighbors of north. The mandate of Obregón was as marked by the revolt of Adolfo of Huerta as regarded itself as the natural successor of Obregón, whereas the president preferred to support Plutarco Elías Calles. Holds gained the elections and Obregón left the presidency.

In 1928, Obregón was presented again to the presidential elections and gained a second mandate. It moved towards Mexico City to celebrate its election. Jose of Leon Toral, a catholic student opposed to the anticlericalism of Obregón assassinated it the July 17th 1928 in a restaurant.

Ciudad Obregón (literally City Obregón ), indicates a city located in Sonora, the Country of origin of Obregón and re-elected in the honor of the general. A district of Mexico City, located at the place of its assassination, bears its name for the same reasons.
