Álvaro Colom
Álvaro Colom Caballeros is a Guatemalan Politician , born the June 15th 1951 with Guatemala. He is elected president of the Republic of Guatemala in November 2007.
Member of the National union of the hope - in Spanish: be Unidad Nacional of Esperanza -, Political party generally classified at the center left, he was candidate on several occasions with the presidential election.
At the time of the presidential election of 2003, it contributes to the first then with the second turn. At the time of the first turn, organized the November 9th 2003, it collected: 707578 votes, are 26,4 % of the votes cast, vis-a-vis Óscar Shepherd (supported by the Great national alliance, which collects: 921233 votes, are 34,3 % of the votes cast.
With the second turn, organized the December 28th according to, Óscar Berger carries it with: 1235303 votes, are 54,1 % of the votes cast, vis-a-vis Álvaro Colom which collects: 1046868 votes, are 45,9 % of the votes cast.
For the presidential election of 2007, to which the outgoing president cannot be represented, like wants it the Guatemalan constitution, the chances of Álvaro Colom appear more solid. According to a survey published on August 31st by the newspaper El Periodico and carried out by the institute Vox Latina, for first turn organized the September 9th, Álvaro Colom is credited with 30,7 % of the voting intentions, vis-a-vis Otto Pérez, reprocessed general supported by the patriotic Party, credited with 27,7 % of the voting intentions, while a dozen other candidates share the remaining voting intentions. According to any probability, a second turn, planned for on November 4th, 2007, should allow to decide between the two candidates made at the head at the first turn.
November 4th, 2007 Alvaro Colom is elected president of the Republic, with 52,8% of the votes, it preceding of more than five points the general Otto Perez Molina, at the time of the second turn of the presidential election.
