Álava (Basque Araba ) is a province located in the north of the Spain in the south of the community autumn of the Basque Country, of which it is one of the three provinces. It is bordered by the provinces of Burgos, Rioja, Navarre, Guipúzcoa, and of Biscay. Its capital is Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Álava has an enclave belonging to the Province of Burgos (Castille-and-León), the county of Treviño ( Condado de Treviño ), prone to controversy.
The code ISO 3166-2 of the Province of Álava is ES-VI .
A long time independent, Álava meets in 1200 with the kingdom of crown of Castille, but in the condition of preserving its privileges (For S, fueros in Spanish).
