Águas Mornas

Águas Mornas is a city Brésil ienne of the State of Santa Catarina.

General information

The city is known for its thermo-mineral water, considered among best of the world for their curative properties. During all the year, it attracts thousands of tourists in its swimming pools with 39 ºC. Its water is ideal for the treatment of the Arthrite, the Rhumatisme S, the Eczéma, etc

Geography

Águas Mornas is located at a Latitude of 27° 41 ' 38" south and with a Longitude of 48° 49 ' 26" west, with a Altitude of 70 meters.

Its population was of: 4410 inhabitants with the census of 2007. The municipality extends on 361 km ².

The city is located at 40 km of the capital of the State, Florianópolis. It belongs to the Microrégion de Tabuleiro, in the Région of Large Florianópolis.

The climate of the municipality is moderate, with an average temperature oscillating between 15ºC and 30ºC.

Located on the buttresses of the tightened C Tabuleiro , the municipality comprises vast covered zones of Atlantic Forêt.

The population of Águas Mornas is still rural with more of the 2/3. Its IDH was of 0,783 in 2000 (UNDP).

History

The first colonists, 40 families originating in Germany, arrive in the area of Águas Mornas in 1860 coming from the colony close to São Pedro de Alcântara. They are soon followed other forwardings. In 1861, the new colony counts already 622 inhabitants.

In 1869, the city becomes a district of Palhoça under the name of Teresópolis , before being attached to Santo Amaro da Imperatriz under the name of Queçaba in 1958. The locality develops however slowly because of the weak fertility of the grounds of the area.

Lastly, the December 19th 1961, the city becomes an independent municipality and changes its name for Águas Mornas (“tepid French water”) because of many the thermal source S which one finds in the surroundings.

Economy and tourism

The economy of the municipality is based on the exploitation of the thermal springs (and the dependant Tourisme) and the culture of the Légume S.

Culture

The principal celebrated festival with Águas Mornas is, in June, the festival of the Sacré-Coeur of Jesus ( festa C Sagrado Coração of Jesus in Portuguese).

Águas Mornas still comprises several localities with the typical architecture of the time of colonization, Vargem Grande, Santa Isabel and Teresópolis.
