Águas Frias (Santa Catarina)

Geography

Águas Frias is located by a Latitude of 26º 52 ' 48" south and by a Longitude of 52º 51 ' 33" west, with a Altitude of 345 meters.

Its population was of: 2551 inhabitants with the census of 2007. The municipality extends on 75 km ².

The city is to 582 km in the west of the capital of the State, Florianópolis. It belongs to the Microrégion de Chapecó, in the mésorégion of the Western of Santa Catarina.

The climate of the municipality is wet with hot summers. The annual average temperature is there of 18,7°C.

IDH of the city was of 0,799 in 2000 (UNDP).

History

The first colonists made in the area are descendants of immigrants Italy NS come from the Rio Grande C Sul. They settle there in the years 1950.

In 1957, the locality becomes district of Chapecó before being attached to the municipality of Coronel Freitas in 1961. The locality bears then the name of Cairu . In 1975, the district takes the name of Águas Frias and becomes municipality with whole share the December 12th 1991.

Origin of the name

While arriving in the area, the first inhabitants of Águas Frias find a source of cold water there what is worth its name with the locality ( águas frias means “French cool water”).

Economy and tourism

The Agriculture represents more than 90% of the economic activity of the municipality, in particular through the cultures of the Haricot, of the Riz, the Soja, the Maïs and the Tabac.

The city comprises a source sulfurous water.

Culture

Every year, the city celebrates the following festivals:

the semana Farroupilha in September;
the festival of Notre-Dame of Health ( festa da Nossa Senhora da Saúde in Portuguese), in November;
the birthday of the city, on December 12th.
