Áed mac Ainmerech was the son of Ainmere mac Sétnai mac Fergus Cennfhota itself wire of Conall Gulban the founder of Cenél Conaill one of the two principal clans of the Uí Neill of North

Áed mac Ainmerech appears in for the first time in the Annales of Ulster in 570 when he avenges death for his father Ainmire mac Sétnai by killing his assassin Fergus mac Néilléne.

It then takes part in the great convention of Druim CEAT in the presence of Saint Colomban first abbot of Iona and cousin-Germain of its father. It receives there the tender of the king Áedán mac Gabráin of Dalriada in Scotland for the Irish provinces of its double kingdom.

In 580 or 581 it is victorious at the time of the battle of Druim Meic Erca during which Colgu mac Domnaill mac Muirchertach mac Muiredach grandson of Eógan the founder of the Cenél nÉogain is killed

It also obtains the title of Ard laughed Érenn in 586 after the meutre with Léim ind Eich of its distance coisin Báetán mac Ninnedo mac Dui mac Conall Gulban of Cenél Conaill which is killed by Cuiméne mac Colmán Bec mac Diarmait, and Cuiméne mac Librén mac Illand mac Cerbaill at the instigation of Colmán Bec,

The following year in 587 during the battle of Doaethe it is Colmán Bec mac Diarmait itself is killed by Aed mac Ainmerech. In 593 Annals record the battle of Belach Daithe, in which fall Colmán Mor mac Diarmait, the founder of the Cholmáin Clan.

Become the uncontested chief of the Uí Neill of North & the South Áed mac Ainmerech turns to the south and the kingdom of Leinster and finds death in 598 with the battle of Dún Bolg against king Brandub mac Eochu combined in Béc mac Cuanu king of Uí Meic Uais.

To its death the title of laughed Ard Érenn is carried jointly by Colmán Rímid of Cenél nÉogain and Áed Sláine of the Uí Neill of the South.
