Áed Ruad
Áed Ruad (or Áedh Ruadh), in the Irish Celtic Mythologie is a king of Ulster, its name means “Áed the red”.
It reigns alternatively with his cousins Díthorba and Cimbáeth, each one of them assuming sovereignty for one seven years period. Àed dies before the end of its reign, drowned in a cascade, now known under the name of Eas Ruaid (the “red cascade” - Assaroe, Comté of Donegal). His/her daughter Macha, called Macha Mongruad (the Red Chewed, because of the color of its hair), claims the royalty in the name of her father for remaining time to reign, which is refused to him by the two other kings. They are beaten by the weapons and Díthorba is killed on the battle field. Chewed Cimbáeth wife and obliges the children of Cimbáeth to build Emain Macha. After the death of her husband, it only reigns on Ulster.
According to Christian-J. Guyonvarc' H and Francoise the Russet-red ( in the Druids - to see bibliography), the Irish patronym Áed is related étymologiquement with the Gaulois Aedui which gave its name to the Éduens, it has the direction of “fire”.
